Set up Google in Shopify

This guide explains how to set up the Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify so your products, ads, and analytics connect correctly.

Complete all steps before continuing with onboarding in Marketer.


Step 1: Install the Google & YouTube sales channel

  1. Log in to Shopify Admin

  2. Go to Settings → Apps and sales channels

  3. Click Add sales channel

  4. Search for Google & YouTube

  5. Select Google & YouTube

  6. Click Add channel


Step 2: Connect your Google account

  1. Open the Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify

  2. Click Connect Google account

  3. Sign in to your Google account

  4. Grant Shopify permission to access your Google services

Important:
Use the Google account that owns or has access to Google Merchant Center, Google Ads, and Google Analytics.


Step 3: Connect Google Merchant Center

  1. Select an existing Google Merchant Center account or create a new one

  2. Verify ownership (phone or email verification)

  3. Set:

    • Target country

    • Language

  4. Configure shipping:

    • Import shipping from Shopify (recommended), or

    • Set shipping manually in Merchant Center

Once connected, Shopify will automatically sync your products to Merchant Center.


Step 4: Connect Google Ads

  1. Select an existing Google Ads account or create a new one

  2. Follow the prompts to complete the connection

This allows:

  • Product-based advertising (Shopping / Performance Max)

  • Conversion tracking

  • Campaign reporting


Step 5: Connect Google Analytics (GA4)

  1. Select an existing GA4 property or create a new one

  2. Click Connect to link the property to Shopify

This enables:

  • Site analytics

  • Conversion measurement

  • Performance reporting


Step 6: Set up Google tag

Follow the on-screen instructions to enable the Google tag.

The tag is required for:

  • Conversion tracking

  • Remarketing

  • Accurate attribution

In most cases, Shopify handles this automatically once connected.


After setup is complete

Confirm the following in the Google & YouTube channel:

  • Merchant Center: Connected

  • Google Ads: Active

  • Google Analytics: Connected

  • Products: Approved or pending review

Your store will now sync products and data with Google services.


Important notes

  • Product approvals are handled by Google and may take time

  • Products must comply with Google Shopping policies

  • Billing must be active in Google Ads for campaigns to run
