Ensuring accurate Google conversion tracking

Last updated: December 22, 2025

Marketer connects directly to your Google Ads and Google Analytics data. Accurate conversion tracking is required for correct reporting, optimization, and budget allocation.

If conversions are missing or incorrect, Google may optimize toward the wrong signals or underreport performance.

Why conversion tracking matters

Google uses conversion data to:

  • Optimize campaigns toward your business goals

  • Attribute results to campaigns, keywords, and ads

  • Calculate ROAS

  • Power automated bidding strategies (e.g. Maximize Conversions, Target ROAS)

Incorrect tracking leads to unreliable results.

What counts as a conversion

Common e‑commerce events include:

  • Page View

  • Product View

  • Add to Cart

  • Begin Checkout

  • Purchase (Transaction)

While all events are useful for analysis, Purchase is typically the primary conversion used for reporting and optimization in Google Ads.

Where to check conversion tracking

In Google Analytics (GA4)

  1. Open your GA4 property

  2. Go to Admin → Events

  3. Confirm key events (e.g. purchase, add_to_cart) are firing

  4. Go to Admin → Conversions and ensure purchase is marked as a conversion

Setting up or troubleshooting tracking

Shopify setup

If you use Shopify, connect Google through Shopify’s native integration or a verified third‑party app. Make sure that:

  • The purchase confirmation page triggers the event

  • Transaction value and currency are passed correctly

  • Duplicate conversions are not firing (for example from both GTM and native tags)

Key limitations to remember

  • Google only tracks events that are explicitly configured

  • Failed, partial, or test orders should not trigger purchase events

  • Missing conversion values will prevent accurate ROAS optimization

Reliable conversion tracking enables Google’s systems to learn correctly and improve campaign performance over time.
